EPISODE 43: A LAND ONCE MAGIC WITH ELLIOT DAVIS AND VIDITYA VOLETI
Episode 43: A Land Once Magic with Elliot Davis and Viditya Voleti | 15 September 2026
Stephen and Trent interview designers Elliot Davis and Viditya Voleti about their collaborative post-fantasy worldbuilding game, A Land Once Magic. The quartet explores philosophical, educational, and mechanical dimensions of tabletop game development and world modeling, as well as:
How A Land Once Magic parallels and complements The Worldbuilding Workshop;
Exercising open-ended creative agency in analog game design;
Replacing rigid construction metaphors with artistic “palette” metaphors that more accurately capture the fluidity of world modeling;
Embracing subjectivity, multiple perspectives, and contradictory views to create more interesting, nuanced worlds;
Structuring a world based on subjective legends, rumors, hearsay, and interpretations rather than objective physical properties;
Understanding worlds as dynamic and transient rather than static and self-sustaining;
Deconstructing Tolkien-style fantasy tropes to challenge conventional boundaries and encourage critical thinking;
“Going wide” to establish atmosphere before deep-diving into role-play;
Depicting slices of a world that paint a picture of its qualities while leaving space for audience imagination;
Moving past “X meets Y” formulas into multi-layered genre combinations that liberate creators from originality anxiety;
Solo role-playing games as a way to exert control amid uncertainty vs. multiplayer role-playing games as a way to collaboratively create chaos;
Game design as a bidirectional conversation where creators shape agency without dictating outcomes;
How players repurpose game mechanics to speedrun and role-play;
Prioritizing creativity and exploration over marketability and rigid rubrics;
Designing for personal enjoyment rather than min-maxing or mathematical optimization; and
Triangular thinking, following passions, and other practical advice for aspiring worldbuilders.
